I wonder if this is the only supercharged diesel car that VW has made. And besides XL-1 it’s the only one with two cylinders.

this was sort of the beginnings of the XL1 project I guess. They had similar displacements and development progressed to the 1L and the L1 then the XL1. I wrote my final year thesis on the XL1.

Can you use it in a sentence?

Guess it’s the fancy way of calling something “rhetorical question”

I was going for the spelling bee style “can you use in a sentence” with anticipation of “Leon711 asked a Question Without Purpose”

Is Oppositelock a country of origin?

Didn’t Öko-Polo reach some kind of production car status (like XL-1 did too)? The smaller siblings were only single prototypes.

It would have been nice to see how XL-1 would have performed if it would be trying the to be light and fuel efficient but without the hybrid system. It was quite light but not amazingly light as the hybrid system is quite complicated and heavy. Did you do any estimates on this?

I know that hybrid system is efficient way for getting good FC or CO2 results in the type approval test but it has little to do with any real world driving. The new upcoming type approval test cycle will change things as it is a lot more transient.

I liked the first 1l prototype. It had only the essential that you would need to drive with it. The second version is trying too much to look modern.

They made over 100 of the Oko - Polo.

I analysed the Aero side of things but without the hybrid bits it would have dropped about 80KG (I think, I might have written it down somewhere) the real killer is that it was a diesel and DSG which are both heavy, it must have been worth it or they would have got rid. I’ve often considered making my own lightweight car, but time and money don’t allow it.

I remember seing the weight figures somewhere but I cannot remember any numbers. Small gasoline engine and normal manual gearbox would have made it a lot lighter. It was mostly a technology demonstrator so it wasn’t probably the absolute best method of getting the good CO2 ratings.

I have been thinking about building light car too but the Finnish legislation is pretty strict for any self made stuff. Technically it’s not impossible barrier to cross but financially it is.

My friend made his own car but he used Smart donor parts to (partly) satisfy the type approval requirements. He got it registered but it is only road legal if he remains the owner.

But I have been making for an electric assisted quadricycle to make my commuting to work more fun. I have too much other things to finish first so it’s not going to happen really soon.

found it! 795kg

Luckily British legislation is reasonably lenient, I wonder if it’s easier to make something to suit British laws, then import it back to Finland?

Quite light it is.

Importing wouldn’t help much unless I would be permanent resident for a while in UK (at least for a year) and import as “a moving goods”. They are treated differently if they have been road legal in some other country.

I had a 86C sedan Polo that I tried to modify for the local auto slalom races (I had a coupe too and I posted its sad fate here too). I gave it quite severe weight removal treatment and weighted it. It wasn’t completely ready during the weighing but without any seats, bumpers or fuel the weight was 640 kg.

It still had a full steel body but glass fiber doors, hood and fenders would have been available to take more weight off. Sadly the car was stolen before I was able to finish it. It was found but in totally destroyed condition. I didn’t even get to see it before it was sent to be crushed. I still got some really sad photos.

You even had the grille with extra lights. The similar one that I bought went with the stolen Polo. I was trying to route the intake air through the opening.

I even had a spare grille with extra lights that had red trim like a golf gti and tape across the lights. I never fitted it though.
